Tourism in Purulia

Tourist Spots in Purulia District

Ayodhya Hills

The hill stands tall at a height of 700m and is a perfect destination for tourist to experience trekking and mountaineering. Professional companies providing training courses, for tourists to learn all techniques of trekking. The hill is popular for its immaculate streams and springs. The two well-known waterfalls of this area are Bamni and Turga.


A trip to the hills can become extremely adventurous because of the presence, of a number of wild animals like Pythons, Cheetah, deers and elephants in the area.

Tourists visit this hill because it is associated with the epic Ramayana. During the festival of Baisakh, when it’s a full moon the tribal’s in the area come together and participate in hunting of wild animals and it is extremely interesting to watch.

Garh Panchkot

This site has the ruins of the palace that was destroyed by the Maratha army. It was the place of the Panchkot Raj during the 18th century. The whole area is surrounded by the Panchkot hills and has two temples.


The temple situated on the Western side is in a dilapidated situation. The other temple is in good condition and has intricate designs and motifs of ducks and that of dancing ladies.

Religious Spots in Purulia

Rekh Deul

This temple is considered to be a temple following Jainism and was thought to be constructed between the 9th and the 11th century. The style that is followed is of Rekh style and the construction is made up of stones and terracotta bricks.

Telkupi

The area is about eight kilometer from north-east part of Cheliama. Two temples are in good condition as on date, there are over twenty temples in this area. Many temples in this region, where submerged in the water, after the construction of Panchet Dam.

Matha Hills

Matha Hills are famous for trekking and are yearly participated by tourists and students’ yearly. Forest authorities actively participate in the camp and provide catering facilities for the participants. Organizations arrange courses for rock climbing for the partakers. Yearly mela is organized by tribals on the hill.

The tribal’s and villagers have local shops that sells locally made handicrafts. The other popular places in the vicinity famous for eco-tourism are: Pakhi Pahad, Dowry Khal, Sirkabad and Purulia pump storage project.
