Administration of Purulia

Purulia district is under the administration of the district magistrate. The official also takes the role of district collector and even the executive officer of the Zilla Parishad. The district magistrate is also supported by additional district magistrate and additional executive officers. Functions such as financial and administrative jobs are carried out by the rural development office.

Sub Divisions of Purulia District

Purulia district is alienated into three sub-divisions, they are further divided into :

Purulia Sardar East

Manbazar - I, development block consists of rural areas with 10 gram panchayats
Manbazar - II, development block consists of rural areas with 7 gram panchayats.
Bundwan, development block consists of rural areas with 8 gram panchayats.
Purulia–I, development block consists of rural areas with 8 gram panchayats.
Purulia–II, development block consists of rural areas with 9 gram panchayats.
Hura, development block consists of rural areas with 10 gram panchayats.
Puncha, development block consists of rural areas with 10 gram panchayats.

Purulia Sardar West

Jhalda–I, development block consists of rural areas with 10 gram panchayats.
Jhalda–II , development block consists of rural areas with 9 gram panchayats.
Jaipur, development block consists of rural areas with 7 gram panchayats.
Arsha, development block consists of rural areas with 8 gram panchayats.
Bagmundi , development block consists of rural areas with 8 gram panchayats.
Balarampur, development block consists of rural areas with 7 gram     
panchayats  and  Balarampur,which is a census town.
Barabazar, development block which consists of rural areas with 10 gram
panchayats and Barabazar which is a census town.

Raghunathpur

Para, development block consists of rural areas with 10 gram panchayats and has two   
Census towns,namely Santaldih and Chapari.
Raghunathpur–I, development block consists of rural areas with 7 gram panchayats and has
Arra, a census town under them.
Raghunathpur–II, development block consists of rural areas with 6 gram panchayats and
Nabagram which is a census town.
Neturia, development block consists of rural areas with 7 gram panchayats and Hijuli and Par
Beliya which are census towns.
Santuri, development block consists of rural areas only with 6 gram panchayats.
Kashipur, development block consists of rural areas with 13 gram panchayats and
Adra which is a census town.


The judicial system of Purulia district is under the district judge. The district judge functions out of the district court in Purulia and carries out matters of civil jurisdiction. All the cases in regards to session, is tried in the session courts and if individuals are found guilty then capital punishment also can be awarded.

Purulia in West Bengal though being run under a rural set up, has well-organized administration system. The various divisions are run efficiently by the rural office employees. Many constituencies have been specifically reserved, for scheduled tribes and their interests are well taken care off.
